Paignton

Backstreets

‘Paignton’ is my book produced during this books and zine project. I’m very grateful to my fellow peers, It has really benefited from the discussions in our WhatsApp group.

Issuu does not allow for the display of horizontal binding. The pictures show the physical product and I’ve attached a Mixam preview link (you’ll need to lock the screen rotation on your phone and rotate your phone through 90 degrees clockwise to get the correct orientation)

The book is 92 pages 112x297mm and I’ve used the wiro binding again. It allows pages to lie flat, or be folded back against themselves. Pages are printed on 200 gsm uncoated paper and the covers on uncoated 350 gsm paper.

The thickness of the paper and covers makes it difficult to ‘flick’ through. As well as being keen on the idea of the book as an object, I’m interested in a hybrid relationship between the physical book and the online world. In this book, the reader can find the location of each image by entering the associated printed three words into the What3Words app on a smartphone or computer.

I did come up against a CMYK colour space issue. The covers were originally intended to be a vibrant red, which they were in sRGB, but they looked dull and muddy in CMYK. Evidently saturated reds and blues are really difficult in CMYK. So now they are a kind of orange.
